Bullbar

As a front guard ( bull trap, cow catcher, cutlass ) is called a stem on road vehicles, which was originally used as impact protection eg against wild. In the Western European road they primarily used for external tuning to give the vehicle a robust appearance. They are usually chromed or painted in vehicle color, high-quality copies are made of polished stainless steel. For commercial vehicles the front guard also serves as an implement carrier, eg for winches.

Frontal protection systems have been criticized because they increase the risk of injury to pedestrians, particularly children in a collision. Since the beginning of 2006 in the EU banning rigid bracket applies to newly registered vehicles of category M1 (passenger cars ) and having a maximum mass not exceeding 3.5 tonnes.

The equivalent with locomotives is the cowcatcher.
