Buncrana

Buncrana ( Irish: Buncrana ) is a town with 3411 inhabitants ( 2006; surrounding area with 5911 people), located on the Inishowen peninsula in the Republic of Ireland. Buncrana is located on the west coast of the peninsula directly on Lough Swilly, a fjord-like estuary that separates the peninsula in the west of the rest of the County Donegal.

Buncrana to Letterkenny and is well ahead of Donegal Town, the second largest city in the county of Donegal and only 22 km from the Northern Ireland Derry City, with the Buncrana Lough Swilly by bus is connected several times a day.

The city is the economic center of the region, but offers few tourist attractions. Dating back to 1799 Neds Point Fort lies just west of the city. In the St. Mary 's Road is one of the oldest still operating movie theaters in Ireland is a beautifully restored Art Nouveau façade.

Best-known personalities from Buncrana are bluegrass musician John Cutliffe and dramatist Frank McGuinness and the actor Ray McAnally. In May 1991, Eddie Fullerton, a council member of Sinn Féin, murdered in Buncrana, and in July 2010 the heaviest road traffic accident occurred near Buncrana since records began in Ireland with eight fatalities.

The closure of a call center in Buncrana in August 2010 resulted in the loss of 100 jobs and was called by Mayor Padraig McLoughlin as "a major blow to already struggling with unemployment at area and emigration ."
