The Federal Highway 683 (abbreviated as BAB 683 ) - Short form: Highway 683 (abbreviated as A 683 ) - was built from 1974 to 1979 and resulted from the motorway junction Dieburg (A 680) over Munster to Rodgau- Hainhausen. There, ended the highway and was run as a B 45 continues to Hanau. A few kilometers after the end of the highway was a link to the A3 at the junction Hanau.

In the 1980s, the highway was graded to the main road and is now part of the B 45 The old route of the B 45 between Dieburg and Hainhausen was also graded. Thus ended the close parallel leadership of two major roads, the town links could be pedestrianized.

For reclassification only the blue Wegbeschilderungen were replaced by yellow. The blue chainage and the motorway standard equipment with parking, side stripes and generous curve radii remained. From time immemorial closely were the curves at Eppertshausen and Rodgau- Dudenhofen, here is the top speed to 100 km / h was limited.

In the late nineties, the four-lane extension of the expressway was continued north across the end at Hainhausen. The access to the A 3 was supplemented with direct connections, abolished the old roundabouts. Thus today there is a continuous motorway-like connection Darmstadt - Dieburg - Hanau - Schluechtern - Flieden ( - Fulda (under construction) ).

The former A 683 today from Dieburg to Hanau- Steinheim referred to as B 45 ( as described above). The rest of the route from Hanau- Steinheim to the Hanauer Kreuz other hand, is referred to as B 43a.
