The Federal Highway 861 (abbreviated BAB 861 ) - Short form: Highway 861 (abbreviated as A 861 ) - leads from the motorway junction High Rhine ( A 98 ) to the border crossing Rheinfelden Switzerland.

The highway was opened on 7 March 2006, a carriageway was released in the year 2003 for the traffic. A part of the 861 is the 1268 m long tunnel Nollinger mountain. The west tunnel was completed in summer 2005. Work on the new border crossing some 60 officers of the Federal Police, as the new route covers about one third of the north-south traffic in the Basel region.

On the territory of the Swiss Confederation is, the road is no longer BAB 861, but is legally considered " feeder road N3 -A98 " classified. This is the first 400 meters after the Swiss border to the exit Rheinfelden- West vignette obligation freely, so that the local traffic can be handled by the bridge.
