Burana Tower

The Burana Tower ( probably derived from the Turkish word for Murana minaret ) is one of the oldest buildings of its kind in Central Asia.

The tower is located about 12 km south- west of the Kyrgyz city Tokmok on the left bank of the river Tschüi.

The building was constructed in the 10th or 11th century. The original height is assumed to be at least 40 m, the upper part, however, was thrown off and destroyed by a powerful earthquake. Today the tower is 21.7 meters high. The plant with the tower and the remains of a double defensive wall, other buildings, as well as fragments of water lines is attributed to the Qarakhanid and is now a museum.
