Region

Burao ( Burco also Bur'o or written ) is a city in northern Somalia with about 159,200 inhabitants. It is the capital of Togdheer region and part of the internationally unrecognized Somaliland.

The majority of the population belongs to the Somali clan of Isaaq.

Geography

The temporary dry river Togdheer ( Wabi Togdheer ) runs through the city. The climate in Burao 's like everywhere in the northern Somali inland year-round warm and dry. Limited rainfall there in December and May.

History

In 1988 bombed the Somali government army Burao to repel the rebels of the Somali National Movement (SNM ). 1991 took place in the city of a meeting of clan elders under the auspices of the SNM held at which the independence of Somaliland from the rest of Somalia was declared on May 18.
