Burmah Agate

The Burmah Agate was a traveling Liberian-flagged oil tanker.

Accident

On November 1, 1979, she was at Galveston, Texas, with about 55,000 tons of crude oil from Nigeria on board at anchor. On the morning of the same day she rammed the driving also under the flag of Liberia freighter Mimosa and crack on the starboard side about 2.5 by 4.5 meter hole in the hull of the Burmah Agate. There occurred an explosion and the escaping oil ignited. The 26- member crew of the Mimosa could be saved, but survived only six of the 37 members of the crew of the Burmah Agate. Approximately 8,500 tons of oil were released into the environment, another 25,000 tons burned. The ship burned until January 8, 1980. Was towed and scrapped on 1 February 1980 after Brownsville.
