Burton Greene

Narada Burton Greene ( born June 14, 1937 in Chicago as Garrett Burton Greene) is an American jazz pianist who has both the avant-garde jazz and klezmer explored.

Life and work

Greene, whose mother was a classical pianist, studied in Chicago, first from 1944 to 1951 classical music at the Fine Arts Academy, then vib 1955-1956 Modern Jazz with Dick Marx in order to act with Billy Green and Ira Sullivan. He retired in the early 1960s to New York City. There was one in the early 1960s to the free jazz scene. With Alan Silva 1963 he founded the Free Form Improvisation Ensemble, which early on was devoted to free improvisation. In 1964 he was like Bill Dixon and Cecil Taylor, a founding member of the Jazz Composers ' Guild. The following year he founded his own quartet with Marion Brown and Henry Grimes. He played with Rashied Ali, Albert Ayler, Gato Barbieri, Byard Lancaster, Sam Rivers and Patty Waters and took several albums for the avant-garde label ESP-Disk on, before he went to Asia and then to Europe in 1969. After a short stay in Paris, he has since lived in Amsterdam. In Europe he worked with musicians such as John Tchicai, Johnny Dyani, Archie Shepp ( Poem for Malcolm, 1969), Anthony Braxton, Maarten Altena or Willem Breuker, but also with Gong. He also dealt in detail with synthesizers. In 1978, he took for the Cologne label Circle Records released two albums under his own name, Structures as a quartet with saxophonist Keshavan Maslak and the solo album European Heritage. In 1980 the duo album The Ongoing with Alan Silva on HatHut Records.

During the 1980s, he began to deal with the klezmer tradition from the perspective of jazz music and founded the group Klezmokum, in which he appeared regularly with Perry Robinson (2003 then the quartet The Klezzthetics than smaller Formation). Greene has worked with Ernst Reijseger next, as well as with Lou Grassi and Wilber Morris Trio ( Throptics on CIMP, 1998).
