Burton Malkiel

Burton Malkiel Gordon ( born August 28, 1932) is an American economist and writer who is known for his popularization of the random walk theory in his book A Random Walk Down Wall Street. In addition, Malkiel is a professor emeritus of the Chemical Bank Chairman's Professor of Economics at Princeton University.

Training

In 1949 Malkiel completed his schooling at the Boston Latin school before 1953 and his bachelor's degree in 1955 his MBA from Harvard University acquired. Thereafter, he worked in business, but was interested in further for academia and eventually received his doctorate in 1964 from Princeton University.

Professional career

After his Ph.D. Malkiel took a position at Yale University, but moved to Princeton University, where he was finally the Chemical Bank Chairman's Professor of Economics was later transferred. During his career at Princeton University Malkiel twice served as Chairman of the Faculty of Economics, as well as a member of the Council of Economic Advisers (1975-1977), as president of the American Finance Association ( 1978) and as Dean of the Yale School of Management (1981 -1988 ). Furthermore, Malkiel was 28 years director of the Vanguard Group and is currently working as CIO of the software- based financial consulting firm Wealth Front Inc. and as a consultant for Robert D. Arnott investment management firm, Research Affiliates.

Personal

Burton Malkiel married his first wife, Judith Atherton Malkiel, in 1954 and had a son with her, Jonathan. After Judith Malkiels death in 1987 Malkiel married in 1988 his second wife, Nancy Weiss, who was from 1987 to 2011 dean of the College of Princeton University. From 1955 to 1958 Malkiel served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army.
