Burton is a city in genesis County in the U.S. state of Michigan and a suburb of Flint ( Michigan). According to the 2000 census, the city had 30,308 inhabitants, making it the second largest city in Genesee County.

History

When the first white settlers in the area applies Levi Gilkey, the 1831 land near the mouth of the Gilkey Creek (now part of Flint ) acquired on 11 May and settled there. In 1833, Burton was part of the Grand Blanc Township. Many of the original settlers of Burton came from the towns of Adams and Henderson in Jefferson County, New York. For many years it was known as the place Atherton, named after the brothers Shubael and Peru Atherton, who settled in the Thread Creek in 1835.

The city was originally organized as Burton Township, named after John Burton, a prominent local farmer. Burton Township was originally a part of the Grand Blanc Township, that then in 1836, Flint Township was. The northern part of Burton was part of Kearsley Township was incorporated together with the southern part of Genesee Township from 1839 to 1843, when the community was back in Flint Township.

When Flint was registered as a town, the Burton Township was separated from the Flint Township according to the resolution of the Genesee County council of 12 October 1855.
