Burtonwood

Burtonwood and Westbrook is a civil parish ( civil parish ) in the English Warrington unitary authority in the region North West England. In 2001 it counted 11,265 inhabitants.

In Burtonwood was until 1994 an airbase of the Royal Air Force, which was also used by the U.S. Air Force and Army units. Parts of the airfield have now been built over by a housing estate.

History

With industrialization Burton Woods population grew from 990 in 1861 to 2,408 in 1911 to. An even greater growth experienced the place due to the influx of military personnel after the opening of the air base in the year 1940 (1951: 8.238 inhabitants). After military was withdrawn in the 50s, the population of Burton Woods dropped to 4,899 in 1971. Civilian use of the former military site and the establishment of settlements was the population again rise sharply ( to currently over 11,000 ).
