By (Doubs)

By is a commune in the French department Doubs in the Franche -Comté.

Geography

By is located at 570 m, south of Quingey, about 29 km south-southwest of the city of Besançon ( straight line ). The village is located in the western Jura, on a ridge north of Mont Poupet: a scenic location about 300 m above the valley basin of the Loue.

The area of ​​7:34 km ² municipal area includes a portion of the western French Jura. The entire area is on the height of the Jura chain, which stretches northward from Mont Poupet to the flow loop of the Loue. The central part is supported by the high level Grand Champier (570 m) ingested, has a footprint of about 1 km ². It continues to the north in the broad crest of the Bois de la Chau, on the 640 m, the highest peak of By is achieved. The southern boundary extends above the steep drop to the valley of Ivrey. To the east, the municipality's area extends over a dry valley to the ridge of the Bois de la Chaînée (620 m).

Neighboring communities of By are Paroy and Ronchaux in the north, Bartherans in the east, Ivrey in the south and La Chapelle -sur- Furieuse, Rennes -sur- Loue and Chay in the West.

History

In the Middle Ages By belonged to the dominions Poupet and mouchard. Together with the Franche -Comté reached the village with the Peace of Nijmegen in 1678 to France.

Attractions

The church of Notre -Dame is originally a medieval building back (Gothic choir ), but has been redesigned several times in the course of time. From a former manor house is just the square tower is preserved.

Population

With 73 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) By one of the smallest municipalities in the department of Doubs. After the population had decreased significantly in the first half of the 20th century (1886 219 persons were still counted ), a slight population growth was recorded since the early 1980s again.

Economy and infrastructure

By was well into the 20th century, a predominantly by agriculture ( crops and livestock ) and forestry embossed village. Even today, the inhabitants live on the merits of the activity in the first sector. Outside of the primary sector, there are almost no jobs in the village. The village is located off the major thoroughfares. The main access is from Rennes- sur- Loue on the main road N83 (Besançon - Lons -le- Saunier ). Further road links exist with Paroy and Bartherans.
