C. B. van Niel

Cornelis Bernardus van Niel (* November 4, 1897 in Haarlem, † March 10, 1985 in Carmel, California ) was a Dutch- American microbiologist.

After studying chemical engineering at the Technical University of Delft, he became an assistant to Albert Jan Kluyver. In 1928 he received his doctorate. Then he continued his work on the Hopkins Marine Station of Stanford University.

In 1931 he drew up a chemical equation for photosynthesis. These and further work contributed to the fundamental understanding of energy flow in the biosphere and led to many other discoveries in this field.

In 1963, he was with the National Medal of Science for his seminal studies in comparative biochemistry of microorganisms, distinguished his work on the mechanisms of photosynthesis and for his achievements in teaching. 1970 van Niel received the Leeuwenhoek Medal for his outstanding contributions to the field of microbiology.
