C. J. Hunter

Cottrell J. Hunter III ( born December 14, 1968 in Washington, DC ) is a former American shot putter. At a height of 1.86 m his competition weight was 149 kg.

Hunter completed his studies in 1991 at Penn State and worked thereafter as a throwing coach at the University of North Carolina. This profession he had to give up when he in 1998 with the sprint world champion Marion Jones had a relationship since coach - athlete affairs disagreed with the university rules. The couple married on October 3, 1998., 2001, left the two divorced again. Today, Hunter is coach at North Carolina State University football team.

His athletic career began Hunter after he failed to qualify in the not for a prestigious high school basketball team. In 1991 he was third in the shot put at the Pan American Championships, but could not at the 1991 World Championships to qualify for the final. In 1992, he surpassed the 20 -meter mark for the first time.

The breakthrough to the world class succeeded Hunter in 1995. At the World Indoor Championships he was with 20.58 meters second behind the Finn Mika Halvari. In the outdoor season, he won the Pan American Championships. At the 1996 Olympics in Atlanta, he finished with 20.39 meters seventh.

With 20.33 meters he won bronze at the 1997 World Championships in Athens. At the 1999 World Championships in Seville led before the final passage of the German Oliver -Sven Buder with 21.42 meters. In the last passage Hunter managed the hitherto longest thrust of his career on 21.79 meters, with which he won the world title before Buder. One day after his title win his wife Marion Jones managed to successfully defend the title in the 100 -meter run.

At the U.S. Trials 2000 Hunter saw a further increase his personal best to 21.87 meters. Prior to the 2000 Olympics Hunter, however, was found guilty of doping with nandrolone, boosting his career ended abruptly.
