  • Cab in the English language was originally an acronym for a hackney-coach for single trips, later for an automobile, which is used in taxi service. The shortening of cabriolet (originally two-wheeled, two - or dreisitziger horse-drawn carriage ) was used in combination with other words, concept forming for several taxi vehicle shapes and then each was realized forming new words as shortening Cab. It started Hackney Cab, where Hackney is an English breed of horse. This medium-sized horses, originally (from 1300) bred as riding horses for ladies were, later, the preferred breed for covering small carriages for passenger transport. Since 1588 in London, the first four rentable for single rides carriages were offered, these were called Hackney Convertible ( two-wheeled ) or Hackney Carriage ( four-wheeler ). Even Hackney the second word of the composition is in English in addition to the original meaning as a short word for Taxi.
  • Joseph A. Hansom (1803-1882) developed a two-seat, open to the front carriage, which he had patented in 1834, when increased the coachman sat behind the hood and was much safer than the traditional coach- built design of the Hackney Cabs. As Hansom Cabs they characterized the streets of Victorian London. As with the first word, Hansom Cab and was used as a short form.
  • Taxicab in turn was originally a U.S. composition of french taxi meter with Cab and designated Mietkutschen for single trips (see above) where the price ( tax ) is calculated according to the distance traveled. In German, the shortening taxi ( by taximeter ) performs the same function as in English language Cab
  • Yellow Cab is the yellow cabs in New York, which in turn were the style for taxi fleets in many other American cities.
  • London Cab stands for taxis that meet the licensing requirements in London. As there temporarily only one model was dominated the market, the term also colloquially for this model and the manufacturer of the series.
  • Checker Cab ( Checker short ), was a car model of the Plancherel Checker Cab Manufacturing Company (later Checker Motors Corporation) was developed and produced in Kalamazoo, Michigan, for the taxi industry.
