Cabomba

Cabomba aquatica

The hair mermaids ( Cabomba ) are a genus of the family of mermaids hair growths ( Cabombaceae ). Few species are used as aquarium plants.

Description

The species of the genus Hair mermaids are for the most part below the water level growing, slender, stems and rhizomatous, mucus leading herbaceous plants. Young vegetative plant parts often have rust-colored hair. The leaves can be eingestaltig or diverse. Immersed growing leaves are arranged opposite or whorled and long-stalked, the leaf blade is divided into five to nine trichotom or dichotomous branched segments, the last subdivision is each more or less linear. Are Floating leaves present, these are alternate, with forked plate -like and linear - elliptic to ovate leaf blade. The petioles are long and short.

The flowers are single, axillary on long flower stems and swim at least the end of flowering time on the water surface. The hermaphrodite flowers are built in whorls and threefold. Both the three sepals and three petals that are slightly tapered at the base and white to yellow or violet colored. The petals are nailed and have nectar leading ears. The three to six stamens have slender stamens, the anthers are beyond the crown. The one to four upper permanent carpels are free in each are usually three (one to five) hanging ovules. The rare one, usually two to four free pen are longer than the little head -shaped scars. Pollination is by insects ( entomophily ).

At maturity the carpels grow apart. In each elongated - pear-shaped fruit usually develop three seeds. The more or less egg-shaped seed has a surface with small humps and contains a tiny embryo, which is surrounded by a thin endosperm layer and abundant Perisperm. The two seed leaves ( cotyledons ) are fleshy.
