Cabrette

The Cabrette, also cabretas ( " little goat "); is a wind instrument from the family of bagpipes, it is considered the most typical of the French region of Auvergne bagpipes.

History and distribution

The musical instrument may have been played since the 18th century by farmers and shepherds of the region, the exact origin is unknown to this day. The instrument arrived late 19th and early 20th century on the Auvergnat emigrants to Paris. On the dance events Auvergnat community, the Bals Musettes or Bals Auvergnats that Cabrette was also played under the influence of Italian immigrants, together with the accordion.

The Cabrette is now used mainly in the Auvergnat traditional and folk music.

Name

The name is from Latin capra Cabrette, " ( female ) goat" and the medieval Latin or Italian Diminutivaffix - etta, French -ette, composed. In Auvergnat is the name of the instrument cabretas.

Function

The instrument consists of the air bag is made of goatskin, provided for decoration with a cloth cover, the bellows and chanter ( pied ), and either one with the chanter on the same floor sitting drone or instead of a ( non-functional ) Zierbordun. Constructive details of today's Cabrette ( the pied Parisien ) were adopted by the Musette du Cour.

Were the first Cabrettes blown, so mid-19th century was added a blower to Cabrette. It is said that Joseph Faure from Saint -Martin -de- Fugères first used in Haute -Loire a blower for the Cabrette. Faure, a carpenter, who was beaten with a lung disease, which was inspired that he had kindled a fire with a blower.
