Cáceres is a town in south-western Brazilian state of Mato Grosso. It lies on the left bank of the Paraguay River, approximately 100 km ( straight line ) from the border with Bolivia and the local border town of San Matías (Santa Cruz ) away. The capital of Cuiabá Mato Grosso state is about 400 km to the east. The Pantanal, one of the largest inland wetlands in the world, lies in the area of Cáceres. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Brazilian federal highway BR -070 connects Cuiabá with Caceres and San Matías (Santa Cruz ) in Bolivia. In addition, the city has a river port and an airport ( IATA code CCX).

The city was founded in 1778.

Cáceres is the seat of the diocese of São Luiz de Cáceres. The Universidade do Estado de Mato Grosso ( UNEMAT ) program has also its registered office and campus.
