Cactus (supermarket)

The supermarket chain Cactus is one of the most important family of Luxembourg. It operates, among others, under the brands of " Cactus ", " Super Cactus" and " Cactus Marché ", supermarkets, hypermarkets and shops in the food retail trade.

The Cactus Group employs 3,960 people (as of 1 January 2013) and is third largest after ArcelorMittal and BGL BNP Paribas Luxembourg private employer.

History

1900, Joseph Leesch a grocery store, which he developed in 1905 with Michel Donven become a wholesaler for colonial goods. 1928 ended the cooperation and Leesch founded a new company under the name " Leesch Frères " along with his three sons, Arthur, Jacques and Aloyse. In 1930 he founded a coffee roasting on the Rue de Strasbourg in Luxembourg (city).

1955 took over the sons Arthur Leeschs, Paul and Alfred, the third generation of the family business. In 1962, she opened on Rue de Strasbourg the first self-service store under the name " VIVO " (United International Sales organization). In 1966, a coffee shop.

The first supermarket under the name Cactus was opened in Bereldange 1967, the second a year later in Brill district in Esch- Alzette. In 1972, a second supermarket in Esch- Alzette.

In 1974 the company opened its first shopping mall, the " Shopping Center Belle Etoile " in Bert Range. It was followed by other supermarkets in different cities of Luxembourg. 1979 opened the first deli company under the name " Schnékert " in Luxembourg (city).

In 1989, the shopping center Cactus Howald with the first FreeFlow restaurant was opened. In the same year, the company moved to a newly built headquarters in Windhof.

1994 and 1995 were the first hardware stores under the name " Cactus Hobbi " opened in Howald, Diekirch and Esch.

2001 Paul Leesch withdrew from the business. His son, Max Leesch took over the presidency of the newly created seven-member Board. General Laurent Schonckert.

2009 saw the introduction of a customer card " Cactus Kaart ", with which one can per 1 euro turnover collect a bonus point. From 500 points you can redeem for rewards then.
