Cadmium sulfide is a chemical compound consisting of cadmium and sulfur. It belongs to the group of II-VI compound semiconductor.

Occurrence

Cadmium sulfide comes in the form of minerals and Hawleyit Greenockit in nature.

Properties

Cadmium sulfide is a solid and can be used as yellow to orange crystals ( wurtzite structure ), as a yellow- brown powder (amorphous cadmium sulfide ) or as scarlet cubic crystals (beta- cadmium sulfide ) are present. It is flammable, when heated in air is decomposition with the formation of toxic sulfur dioxide fumes. Cadmium sulfide reacts with acids to form hydrogen sulphide (H2S).

Toxicology

There is an increased risk of lung injury by repeated or prolonged work with this material. Furthermore, possible effects on the kidneys and bone marrow. Cadmium sulfide is for people at increased risk of cancer dar. It is classified in the EU as carcinogenic category 1 ( R45) and classified as germ cell mutagen category 3A. Welding or soldering work on patients treated with cadmium sulfide materials unlock the highly toxic cadmium, which causes acute lung injury.

Use

Cadmium sulfide is the only cadmium compound with significant economic importance. It is used as a yellow pigment ( cadmium yellow). Friedrich Stromeyer discovered it in 1818 in the laboratory, and it was produced in 1825 in Germany as a pigment. It involves the precipitation of cadmium salts and hydrogen sulfide or sulfides. By this reaction, the subsequent color is affected. Cadmium sulfide is today because of the health concerns and the environmental hazard can hardly be used. The term " cadmium yellow " for the hue established synonymously, although intentioned dyes contain no cadmium.

It is also photo -conductive and is therefore also used in light meters. In addition, it serves as a phosphor in television tubes.
