In 1930, the city of Caen decided to build an airfield in the vicinity of the city. It was decided to place the airfield located close to the west of Caen Carpiquet place. The construction was started in July 1937, was completed in March of the following year.

In June 1940, the Germans captured in the course of the western campaign of the airfield, after which they expanded it and stationed a bomber squadron.

During surgery, Windsor Canadian organizations were commissioned to capture the airfield at Carpiquet by the Germans on July 4, 1944.

Actually the airfield should have been already conquered on D-Day. As this was not successful, the Allies tried with surgery Windsor, to break through the heavily fortified German positions at the airfield. Parts of the Canadian 7th and 8th Brigade and the Canadian 3rd Infantry Division should perform the attack.

After hard fighting succeeded to Canadians on July 5, to take the city Carpiquet. After another three days, on July 8, they also had the airfield at Carpiquet firmly under their control after they had withstood German counter- attacks.

In the follow-up time, the airfield was expanded into an airfield, which is the official airport of the city of Caen today.
