Caesarius of Nazianzus

Caesarius of Nazianzus (c. 330 in Arianzos at Nazianzus; † end of 368 or beginning of 369 in Bithynia in Asia Minor ) was a scholar, physician and saint.

Life

Caesarius of Nazianzus was the son of Gregory of Nazianzus the Elder and the brother of Gregory of Nazianzus the Younger. He studied in Alexandria, geometry, astronomy and medicine. 356 he was appointed court physician ( Archiatros ) and Comes Constantius II. When Julian wanted to win it for his pagan views, he left the farm, his successor Jovian brought him back, however, and Valentinian I. appointed him governor of Bithynia 364. 368 he was appointed Comes sacrarum largitionum, but probably died in the same year. Shortly before his death, he was baptized.

Canonization

Caesarius regarded as the patron saint of physicians.

His feast day in the Catholic Church is the 25th of February in the Orthodox Church March 9.

Work

From Caesarius ' works are a funeral oration on his brother and Epitaphia obtained ( Migne PG 38).

Since Photius Caesarius is a probably penned in the 5th or 6th century dogmatic and exegetical works attributed ( Caesarii Dialogi or pseudo - Kaisarios, Migne PG 38, 851ff. ), Which shall be given in the form of dialogue on various theological issues and descriptions of late antique peoples contains. It is considered one of the earliest written sources about the Slavs.
