Cagliari Calcio

Cagliari ( Sardinian: Casteddu ) ( to 1970 U.S. Cagliari) is an Italian football club from Cagliari in Sardinia. By 2012 the club at the Stadio Sant'Elia approached. From the 2012/13 season the team moved to the approximately ten kilometers away Stadio Is Arenas Quartu Sant Elena.

History

The club was founded in 1920 and achieved his greatest success in 1970 by winning the Italian championship.

Although Cagliari Calcio in its current form until 1934 was regarded as the official founding date of August 20, 1920. On that day, a group of students from the University of Cagliari FC Cagliari, who four years later with the club for Club Sportivo Italia U.S. Cagliari merged and until the dissolution in 1934 was only regionally significant. In the same year the club Unione Sportiva emerged as Cagliari ( Cagliari U.S. ) new and hovered in the postwar years, first between Series B and C (2nd and 3rd league ) before them in 1964 with the promotion to Serie A, the sporty breakthrough succeeded.

U.S. Cagliari quickly established itself in the top Italian league and reached in 1970 with the Italian league title the largest to date club success after they had previously been runner-up a year. Significant part of this was the storm Star Luigi "Gigi" Riva, today 's biggest idol of the Cagliari fans. In the European Cup but they could not build on the national achievements in these years. First Cagliari failed after the runner-up in the second round of the UEFA Cup at FC Carl Zeiss Jena (DDR ), and a year later in Europe Champions Cup at the Spanish side Atlético Madrid.
