Caio Koch-Weser

Caio Koch-Weser Kai ( born July 25, 1944 in Rolândia, Brazil ) is a financial expert and former high-ranking German taxman. He was Vice President and Managing Director of the World Bank, and State Secretary of Finance (1999-2005) of the German Federal Government. Since January 2006 he is a consultant in the expanded Board of Deutsche Bank.

Life and work

Caio Koch-Weser was born in Brazil; his parents and grandparents left Bremerhaven during the Nazi era. His grandfather is the left-liberal DDP politician Erich Koch -Weser, who was in the Weimar Republic Minister of Justice (1928-1929) and Vice-Chancellor (1920). The family already emigrated in 1933 to Rolândia, Brazil, where Erich Koch -Weser built a coffee plantation and a German colony. After school, there Caio Koch-Weser attended from 1961 the grammar school school Birklehof in Hinterzarten / Schwarzwald and then studied economics, sociology and history in Münster, Berlin and Bonn. He finished his studies as a graduate economist.

Caio Koch- Weser, German and Brazilian citizen, he is married to Maritta Rogalla of Bieberstein Koch-Weser ( Rogalla of Bieberstein ), who, like her husband 20 years of their working life (1980 - 1998) worked at the World Bank and is now on the Board of Earth3000 and GEXIE ( Global Exchange for Social investment ) and is on the Board of the German climate Foundation. They have three children.

Policy

From 1973 he worked for the World Bank in 1991 as Vice President and since 1996 as a managing director.

In May 1999 he became State Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Finance in the Cabinet Schröder I. He was in 2000 the first candidate of the Federal Government for the position as Managing Director and Executive Chairman of the Board of the International Monetary Fund, but was rejected by the U.S., Horst Köhler was elected later.

Economy

In October 2005, Koch-Weser announced to want to leave the Treasury at his own request. He moved into the private financial sector and is active in the extended board of Deutsche Bank since January 2006. As vice chairman, he reports directly to the CEO and will be the Extended Group Management Board and the Bank's clients as a consultant. This change is being reviewed by the Federal Ministry of Finance on potential conflicts of interest back. When BMF he was responsible, among other previously for the bank control. In his role as Secretary of State he had the controversial management structure of Deutsche Bank approved, although the Justice Department had expressed considerable concern.

The Berlin public prosecutor initiated in March 2008 a criminal investigation against the Bank CEO Josef Ackermann in the case to the State guarantee of Deutsche Bank for the Baltic Sea pipeline. It is alleged the accusation of criminal advantage also extended to the accused Caio Koch-Weser.

Caio Koch-Weser is very well connected through his memberships in various think tanks, he was until 2011 a member of the Board of Trustees of the Bertelsmann Foundation, he is on the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum (WEF ) and the board of the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel. He is also a member of the think tank European Council on Foreign Relations, the European Climate Foundation ( ECF) and the Centre for European Reform (CER).
