Cairo – Cape Town Highway

The Cairo - Gaborone ( Cape Town ) Highway No. 4 of the Trans - African highways, the international road network that the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa ( UNECA ), the African Development Bank ( ADB) and the African Union are developing. The route has a length of 10,228 km and was the first TAH - route that has already been planned for the end of the 19th century.

Route

The route runs through Egypt, Sudan, Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana and South Africa. South Africa was not included because of apartheid in this route, but today is recognized by generally accepted that the route leads to Cape Town. First one had Pretoria provided as an endpoint, but after considering the importance of the seaport Cape Town an end in Pretoria incomplete worked, and because all the highways of the Southern African Development Community (SADC ) lead to Cape Town, it was decided to also perform this route to the Cape. In various documents this road is also called " Cairo - Gaborone Highway" or " Cairo - Pretoria highway".

Missing sections

The southern half of the Cairo - Gaborone ( Cape Town ) highways is ready, but in the northern Sudan, where sand slopes make it necessary to use four-wheel drive vehicles, in northwestern Ethiopia, in northern Kenya and in the middle of Tanzania, new roads are needed. For several years, the border crossing from Egypt to Sudan is prohibited because of the disputed border on the Hala'ib Triangle, can be used instead, a car ferry over Lake Nasser.

Most of the route through Ethiopia passes through mountainous regions, causing some distances can be dangerous, even though they are paved. A road section still needs to be supplemented only in the far northwest.

The missing section in Kenya has yet to be paved and from time to time is this route in part because of robbery armed bandits dangerous.

Since Kenya has a paved link to the South Sudanese border, eventually could be through the southeast Sudan to Khartoum a shorter alternative to the route through Ethiopia a route.

The gravel road through Dodoma in central Tanzania is temporarily impassable, and so the alternative route via Moshi, Morogoro Korogwe and could be considered a better option for the management of a highway. However, this route has been serviced poorly in recent times.

Between Chalinze ( Iringa ) and Kapiri Mposhi in Zambia uses the highway an important, paved regional route, the Tanzam Highway, which also means there Great North Road. This highway connects currently the only two major regions of Africa, namely East and Southern Africa. It is used by all TAHs most.

With some variations, the Cairo - Gaborone ( Cape Town ) Highway similarities with the Cape to Cairo plan of the British Empire from the time of the early 20th century.
