Caixa Geral de Depósitos

The Caixa Geral de Depósitos SA, short CGD, is the largest bank in Portugal and comparable to the German savings banks. The shares is one hundred percent owned by the Portuguese State. The seat is Lisbon. The share capital amounts to EUR 2.95 billion.

The German representative office is located in Berlin. The Swiss office is in Geneva.

History

The bank was founded as a successor to the established by the Marquês de Pombal Depósito Público de Lisboa e Porto on April 10, 1876 Decree of the Government Fontes Perreira e Melo. As an example, the French Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, founded in 1816, and the Belgian Caisse Générale d' Epargne et de retreat, founded apply 1865. In 2001, the merger took place with the BNU Banco Nacional Marino Ultra SA The BNU, founded in 1864 was previously an independent State Bank of Portugal, which completed primarily payments between the colonies and the mother country.
