Lying in third place on lap 170 he touched the outer boundary wall of curve 2 and was thrown inside. With contributed to his rescue should the fact that he was the first racing driver, who was wearing a full-face helmet in Indianapolis. When he awoke from a coma after several days, he decided to withdraw from racing. Since this race from 1950 to 1960 also belonged to the Drivers' World Championship, has the statistics at Niday of three Grand Prix starts.

Niday died in February 1988 with a vintage car race after an accident of a heart attack.
