Calamagrostis arundinacea

Wood small-reed ( Calamagrostis arundinacea )

The wood small-reed ( Calamagrostis arundinacea ) is a plant of the genus Riding grasses ( Calamagrostis ) within the family of grasses ( Poaceae ). It is widely distributed in the temperate regions of Eurasia.

Description

The forest - reed grass is a perennial, herbaceous plant, which reaches stature heights of 60 to 120 centimeters. It forms loose clumps with kurzkriechender basic axis and very short runners. The upright stems are more than the upper end slightly rough. The dark green leaf blades are 4-7 mm wide, with short hair on the top, on the bottom shiny. At the base of the leaf, there are tufts of hair, the ligule are under 2 millimeters long.

The flowering period extends from June to July. The short- branched panicle with numerous spikelets appear narrow and elongated; their upright branches lie down after flowering to the main axis. The Ährchenachse is hairy. The lanceolate spikelets are 5-6 mm long, have a pale green color and are sometimes spotted purple; the fringe of hair barely reaches 1 millimeter. On the back of a lemma about 7 millimeters long springs, gekniete awn, which towers above the glume about 3 millimeters.

Distinction to a related type

The forest - reed grass is closely related to the mountain reed grass ( Calamagrostis varia), from which it differs by the much shorter hair ring and to different site requirements.

Occurrence

The forest - reed grass is common in the temperate zone of Eurasia. Only rarely in the lowlands, its distribution ranges from the mountainous country to the foothills.

The forest - reed grass is found in shady deciduous forests, but also abundant in the forest blows at the tree line and on Hochstaudenfluren. It prefers warm, only slightly moist, mineral-rich but poor in lime, stony soils.

Use

Some species are used as ornamental plants in parks and gardens. Special importance is crossed by the gardener hybrids Calamagrostis × acutiflora from Calamagrostis Calamagrostis × arunidinacea epigejos with their most important cultivar ' Karl Foerster '.
