Calcium lactate gluconate, a double salt of lactic and gluconic acid, is a white, odorless, tasteless, crystalline solid.
Properties
The calcium content amounts to between 10% and 13%. The calcium content is calculated as the molar mass of the mixture ratio of calcium lactate (13% calcium) to calcium gluconate (9% calcium).
A conveniently chosen molar ratio of the two anions ( lactate and gluconate ) causes a synergistic increase in solubility; therefore has calcium lactate gluconate 400 g / L, the second highest (after calcium chloride) solubility at all calcium salts, and has at the same time a very good bioavailability of the calcium contained in. For comparison, the solubility of calcium lactate is 66 g / L, the calcium gluconate 35 g / L.
Use
In addition to the long-known positive influence of calcium on bone density (see Osteoporosis ) recent studies show that an adequate calcium intake and the risk for overweight and obesity decreases. For these reasons, calcium lactate gluconate is used for calcium fortification as an additive for foods and dietary supplements ( functional food ) are used. In addition, it is also used in drugs and feeds. For example, it takes place in effervescent tablets as a calcium source use.
