Calcutta Rescue

Calcutta Rescue is a non-governmental organization which has its headquarters in Calcutta, India. Takes you there and in rural West Bengal through projects to help the poorest of the poor, regardless of gender, race, color, religion, age, political opinion or social status. The organization was founded in 1979 by the British doctor Jack Preger. The assistance includes free medical care, as well as schools and vocational training.

History

The British founder Jack Preger followed as a young doctor in 1972 a public call for help and worked for a few years in Bangladesh. As in 1977 on child trafficking to Europe reveals for adoption, there was a political scandal. Preger was consequently expelled from the country and went to Calcutta. Here he cared for the refugees from Bangladesh and the poorest of the poor. The aid is considered the poorest of the poor regardless of gender, skin color, religion, age, political opinion or social status.

Projects

In the four outpatient clinics Talapark, Belgachia, Sealdah and Chitpur, patients with infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and leprosy, chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes mellitus, but also treated wounds. In addition to their treatment patients receive in hospitals, a health education eg of hygiene, nutrition, family planning, child care and the proper handling of diseases.

In a sewing project to learn women without training near generic basic skills and how to use the sewing machine. These women, most of them former patients or widows who have to feed a family place, for schools and clinics clothing manufactures and handicrafts for sale in Europe and India. Calcutta Rescue India maintains two schools for street and slum children. Around 450 children from 4 to 15 years attend for four years one of the schools and get such a chance at a better life. Read and write in Bengali, Hindi and English and numeracy are in addition to the health education on the curriculum. You will also receive a balanced meal every day, if necessary, clothing and regularly receive medical care. 150 children allows Calcutta Rescue India currently attending a secondary school. The promotion will take place until the completion of vocational training.

Volunteers

Financing

The organization is financed by funding groups in various countries and by individual donors. The initiators and active members are people of all ages and professions who usually have previously worked as a volunteer in Calcutta.
