The Caledon Nature Reserve ( Free State ) nature reserve is situated 120 km south-east of Bloemfontein on the road R701 between Wepener and Smithfield in the Free State Province in South Africa. It is 2,300 hectares.
It is named after the flowing near Caledon River, which is dammed at Welbedacht dam. This dam supplies Bloemfontein with water, the Natural Reserve is located on the western shore of the reservoir.
In addition to the wide variety of birds ( over 200 species, most of which waterfowl) is home to the NSG and Black Wildebeest, Blesbok, Springbok and zebra.
Two floating bush camps on rafts offer overnight accommodation for hikers and canoeists. On the shore there are for self-catering, a lapa with barbecue facilities. Fishing is the main attraction here, in river and dam there are barbel, Yellow Fish and carp.
