The California Memorial Stadium is a stadium in Berkeley, California, on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley.

History

The stadium was opened in 1923 and serves primarily as a venue for the football games of the California Golden Bears, who play in the Pacific -12 Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association. On 27 November 2006, the stadium in the National Register of Historic Places was recorded.

The Memorial Stadium was funded by private donations, in memory of the Californians who have lost their lives in the First World War.

The seating capacity was 80,000 at the opening and was last reduced in 2001 after working on 71 799. The record number of audience was achieved in 1947 with 83,000 spectators against a team from the Navy. The location in the hills of Berkeley offers viewers in the top ranks panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay.

Already from 1981 to 1994 and again since 2003 Stadium will be played on artificial turf in Memorial.

Traditionally, the annual derby against rivals Stanford, called Big Game, and the hill behind the stadium, the Tightwad Hill, used as a spectator area to get the game for free to view.
