Calistoga, California
Napa County
06-09892
The City of Calistoga was founded in 1859 by Samuel Brannan and lies at the northern end of the Napa Valley, about 120 km away from San Francisco, between far-reaching fields of vines.
One of the attractions is the geyser " Old Faithful ", which ejects up to 20 m high fountain at regular intervals.
Calistoga offers opportunities to go hiking, cycling, horse riding and canoeing. However, it is very hot in the summer months. Brannan founded the city in order to bring tourists to the healing springs, which he had discovered and purchased here. He built for even a railroad. However, the project failed because of too few visitors.
The city has two museums:
- Redwoods Museum: relics from the early days of the city
- Sharpsteen Museum: dioramas and artifacts of Indians
Sons and daughters of the city
- Dick Vermeil ( b. 1936 ), U.S. American football coach
