Callionima

Callionima calliomenae

Callionima is a genus of butterflies of the family of moth ( Sphingidae ).

Features

The small moths of the genus have a strikingly uniform appearance. They all have brown forewings with a crescent-shaped blade tip. On the fore wings there is ever a silvery- white iridescent Diskalfleck. The wing pattern can be very complex and serves to camouflage the butterfly on the forest floor between foliage well depending on the type. The hind wings have a flashy garish - orange color. The morphology of the genitalia resembles that of the genus Erinnyis.

Only a few species the caterpillars are known. They have a long and slender body, which tapers towards the head. There is a pair of longitudinal stripes on the sides of the body. The Analhorn is penetrated.

Occurrence and life

The genus is demonstrated, inter alia, Florida, Mexico and Costa Rica. The species status of individual species, however, is currently not well understood, so the distribution of each species is sometimes uncertain. The known caterpillars feed on dogbane family ( Apocynaceae ).
