Description and ecology

In Callistemon species are evergreen small trees or shrubs. Many species have long, slightly overhanging branches.

The change-constant leaves are lanceolate or linear and always entire. They contain many essential oils and fragrant when crushed slightly aromatic. Often the leaves are such that they face the sun with its narrow side.

The flowers are in the axils of small, closely spaced bracts. The single flowers have only inconspicuous bloom, but the mostly red-colored and long stamens are prominent and are more or less vertically from the inflorescence axis from. This gives rise to cylindrical inflorescences, which resemble a red bottle brush or a bottlebrush. The anthers are yellow in many species.

The inflorescence axis is above the inflorescence continues its development with a series of normal leaves. After some time, then changes to the next inflorescence, often while the fruits of old inflorescence are not yet ripe.

The nectar- rich flowers are pollinated by birds, which occurred shortly hold on to the inflorescence axis below the inflorescence.

The very woody, hard capsule fruits often remain closed for several years and contain many tiny seeds. Only after a bush fire, the seed capsules and release the seeds open ( Pyrophyt ).

Occurrence

The Callistemon species are from Australia, particularly from the east and south-east Australia, where they occur from the tropics to temperate latitudes. Two species are native to the south-west of Australia and four from New Caledonia.

Most species grow in water-rich places, such as along streams or in areas that are regularly flooded.
