Callitris preissii

Callitris preissii is a plant belonging to the family of the cypress family ( Cupressaceae ). It is native in southern Australia.

Description

Callitris preissii grows as evergreen shrub or tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 20 meters. He rarely makes several tribes. The branches go straight or upright from the trunk, and can sometimes be stunted.

The gray - to blue- green leaves are 2 to 4 millimeters long, and its back is rounded.

The male cones are in groups on the branches and are at a length of up to 5 millimeters cylindrically shaped. The egg-shaped and flattened - spherical female cones are provided together on a shaft individually or in groups and have a diameter of 2 to 3.5 cm. Each pin includes six thick cone scales and numerous seeds. The cones remain after maturity a few years on the branches before they laid off and drop the seeds. The dark brown seeds are about 4 millimeters in size and have two or three blades.

Occurrence and risk

The natural range of Callitris preissii located in the Australian states of New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and southwestern Western Australia.

Callitris preissii grows on calcareous sandy soils which have formed on old coastal dunes.

Callitris is preissii in the IUCN Red List as " least concern " = 1998 " not endangered". It should be noted that a re-examination of risk is necessary.

Use

Callitris preissii is used as an ornamental tree.

The Aborigines along the Murray River produced about 4 feet to long spears from the wood, which was used both for fishing and for punting canoes. The resin was used for the attachment of barbs on their spears.

System

The first description was in 1845 by preissii Callitris as Friedrich Anton Wilhelm Miquel in Plantae Preissianae, Volume 1, page 643

Callitris preissii is divided in to two sub- types:

  • Callitris oblonga subsp. murrayensis J.Garden grows as a tree that can reach heights of growth of up to 20 meters. The cones are usually thicker than 2.5 centimeters. This subspecies occurs in New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia before where it grows mainly in the valley of the Murray River. A synonym is Callitris propinqua R.Br. ex R.Baker & H.G.Smith.
  • Callitris preissii subsp. preissii is the nominate form. It grows as a tree with straight or upright branching from the core branches. The pegs are 2.5 and 3 inches thick. One finds this subspecies throughout the range. Synonyms are Callitris gracilis Baker and Callitris robusta R.Br. ex Bailey

Callitris preissii forms natural hybrids with Callitris glaucophylla.
