Features

Butterfly

The wingspan of the butterfly is 28 to 30 millimeters. The front wings are colored ash generally and show indistinct stripe-shaped, dark-gray, blue-gray or brown -gray interference. Blemish absent, as are cross lines. About the middle of the inner edge of a crescent, dark drawing gently lifts out. The hind wings are without markings whitish, slightly darkened at the outer edge. The dark veins are easily visible. Characteristic are hood -like tufts of hair on the head and thorax. The proboscis is well developed.

Caterpillar

Full-grown caterpillars have a gray-white ground color and are covered with yellow, interrupted at the segment cuts longitudinal lines and back with black spots and many small, also black side dots.

Doll

The doll is colored yellow-brown. The proboscis sheath is extremely long and reaches the end of the abdomen.

Distribution and habitat

The occurrence of Calophasia platyptera extends through the entire Mediterranean to Asia Minor and Armenia. The species was also detected in Austria and Switzerland. They settled prefers warm slopes, heathland, gardens and parks.

Way of life

Calophasia platyptera forms depending on the region of two or three generations per year, the butterflies are found from April to October. Visit for nectar recording different flowers during the day and appear at night also to artificial light sources. The caterpillars feed on the leaves and flowers of different snapdragon (Antirrhinum ) or Leinkrautarten ( Linaria ). The species overwinters as a pupa.
