Cambridge is a village in Washington County, New York, United States. In the United States Census 2000, the town counted 1925 inhabitants. The Village of Cambridge located partially within the same Town and partly in the Town of White Creek and is part of the Glens Falls Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of ​​4.3 km ², all of which related to land. Apart from the location in the two Towns of Cambridge and White Creek borders the Village and the Town of Jackson. Cambridge is at the crossroads of New York State Route 22 ( Park Street ), New York State Route 313 ( Maple Avenue / Grant Street ) and New York State Route 372 (Main Street).

History

The settlement is named after the city of Cambridge in England. Originally, the area belonged to the Albany County, but it was the 1791 Washington County affiliated. The colonization Cambridge goes back to the 1760s and begins after the end of the French and Indian War when the formerly disputed border area was secure. After the American Revolutionary War began a population growth, which was favored, as in 1825 the Champlain Canal was built. The railway reached Cambridge for the first time in 1852, when the Troy and Rutland Railroad was built. A railway station was built at the former hamlet of North White Creek.
