Caminito

The Caminito is a 100 meter long pedestrian street in the district of La Boca in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Description

In the early 19th century ran along the present road is a small river that emptied into the Riachuelo. Later, the area became known as " Puntin ," the Genoese word for " little bridge ", because that very bridge over which time the people crossed the river. When the water flow dried up, there were railway tracks laid ( parts of it still exist along the Garibaldi Street). In 1954 the railway line was shut down and filled the old river bed. The corner was for some years the eyesore of La Boca, until the artist Benito Quinquela Martín resorted to buckets of paint and the facades along the street colorful painting. 1959 Caminito to Museum Road ( Calle Museo ) was declared. 1960 a wooden theater stage was erected at the southern end, which was replaced in 1972 by a real theater nearby. Today the street is a landmark of the city and is a popular attraction with visitors.

The Caminito was also immortalized in a tango. The music for " Caminito " (1926 ) comes from Juan de Dios Filiberto, the text of Gabino Coria Peñaloza.
