Lock of Arles

The Canal d' Arles à Fos is a ship canal in the south of France, the branches of the canalised Rhone in Arles and runs parallel to the river in a southerly direction to Fos -sur -Mer. Here he reached the Canal du Rhône à Fos, where he is but blocked by a salt water barrier for shipping.

History

Throughout its history, the course of the channel on the Mediterranean side has been amended several times and had therefore always different names. The original designation was Canal d' Arles à Bouc, because he was in his construction of Arles on Fos -sur- Mer to Port-de -Bouc. In the 1970s, the port of Fos -sur -Mer was rebuilt, making the connection to Port -de- Bouc was no longer given. The channel was therefore divided into the Canal de Fos à Port-de -Bouc and the Canal d' Arles à Fos. However, the transport capacity of the latter was too small and an expansion too expensive, so the decision was made in the 1980s with the Canal du Rhône à Fos a shorter and more powerful connection to Rhône erect. Here, the existing opening section was added to the new channel to the port of Fos -sur -Mer and built at the confluence point a salt water barrier that the Canal d' Arles à Fos had become a dead end for the shipping.

Course

The channel branches in the southern city of Arles on the channelized tributary Grand Rhône and reaches immediately the lock Arles, the only which is still in operation this channel. It has a dimension of 100 x 12 meters and was originally developed for large ships. The channel then reached the port city of Arles, turns south to southeast direction and reached after 31 kilometers of the municipal boundary of Fos -sur -Mer and Port-Saint -Louis -du -Rhône to the newly constructed Canal du Rhône à Fos. Since the passage at the entrance site for the craft is locked, it is now used mainly as flood discharge for the area south-east of Arles. However, the channel is navigable up to the lock with ships.
