Cancels

Cancellans (Latin, German exchange blade, sometimes Auswechselblatt, Replacement Blade, transfer printing, . Engl cancel leaf ) is the scientific term for a book exchanged page in a book. The exchange is made by the manufacturer of the book before publication due to typesetting errors or content errors. The Replacements sheet is Cancellandum, rarely also Cancellatum, the replaced sheet refers. This can motivate them to exchange even the smallest errors like punctuation errors. If the exchange is not in the entire run, set differente types of printing can occur.

In a Einblattkarton a single -replaceable sheet is cut to the block edge. On the remaining strips the newly set and printed page is glued.

Double sheet cartons are hardly recognizable as a complete replacement sheet not glued, but is included.

The relatively elaborate process was widespread until the end of the 18th century and was replaced by the corrigenda, or errata, a simple beige blank sheet with the list of changes or deletions. Today, an exchange is only performed in exceptional cases.
