The Aeropuerto Internacional de Cancun is an international airport in the tourist center of Cancun on the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. He is the airport with the most international passengers in Latin America, as well as a whole, of the number of passengers forth by the International Airport of Mexico City is the second largest airport, Mexico.

History

The major airport was opened by President Luis Echeverría Álvarez on March 30, 1975. Before there was a landing strip on Avenida Kabah.

The two terminals (Terminal 1 for charter flights, Terminal 2 for scheduled flights), is a third added. The opening of the 42,000 square meters and 100 million USD expensive third terminal was held on 17 May 2007. Terminal 1 since October 2005, when Hurricane Wilma airport was suspended, closed. The charter flights have since been mainly handled in Terminal 2.

A second airstrip was built with 1420 meters distance parallel to the first. The project was completed on schedule in 2009. A second tower had to be built for the new runway. This is with 97 meters, the highest in Latin America.

The airport is operated by privatization since 1999 by the private group ASUR ( Aeropuertos del SURESTE ).
