Candido Cannavò

Candido Cannavò ( born November 29, 1930 in Catania, † February 22, 2009 in Milan ) was an Italian sports journalist and editor of the Gazzetta dello Sport.

Life

Cannavò started working at the age of 19 years as a sports journalist for the newspaper La Sicilia. From 1952 to 1955 he was president of the Centro Universitario Sportivo di Catania, the University Sports Club of the University of Catania. In 1955 he was hired by the Gazzetta dello Sport, for which he was a special correspondent at several football World Cups, nine Olympic Games and numerous editions of the Giro d' Italia in the following years.

In 1983, Gino Palumbo Cannavò followed as editor of the Gazzetta. During his tenure, which lasted 19 years, Cannavò could strengthen the position of his newspaper as one of the most widely circulated in Italy, he founded the weekly magazine Sports Week and prompted the creation of a website. During these years he was still working as a columnist.

After his resignation as editor of the Gazzetta dello Sport published in 2002 Cannavò an autobiography and three books that deal with the circumstances in Italian prisons, with the situation of people with disabilities and the homeless and published by Rizzoli.

In February 2009 Cannavò died at Milan's Santa Rita clinic due to a cerebral hemorrhage.
