Cannae

Cannae ( ancient Greek Κάνναι Kannai, Italian Canne della Battaglia, German also Kannä ) was a place in southern Italy ( Apulia), about 60 km north- west of Bari, near the mouth of Ofanto.

Possibly found here in 216 BC the famous Umfassungschlacht of Cannae between the Romans and the Carthaginians under Hannibal instead. Cannae was at that time the most important supply center of the Romans ( sea trade ).

On October 1, 1018 a battle between the Normans and the Byzantines took place. This second battle of Cannae ended with the defeat of the Normans.

Cannae was destroyed in 1083 by the Normans and not rebuilt.
