Canning Town station

Canning Town is a station of the London Underground and the Docklands Light Railway (DLR ) in the London Borough of Newham. The transport hub is located in the Travelcard Zone 3 at the intersection of the main roads Barking Road and Silvertown Way. In the year 2011 there were 8.71 million passengers this transportation hub, which also includes a bus station belongs.

Plant

The station complex is above ground, but the access is by an underground connecting hall with stairs, escalators and lifts up to all platforms and the bus station. West of the station building are two central platforms superimposed. On the lower ground floor platform, the Jubilee Line of the London Underground, DLR holds at elevated platform ( for trains in west-east direction). On the east side is the former central platform of the North London Line, which is now used by DLR trains in north-south direction.

History

The station was opened in 1846 by the Eastern Counties and Thames Junction Railway to open up the Thames Ironworks and several docks. On June 21, 1898 came very close to a serious accident, wanted to watch as a large crowd to the launch of the vessel The Albion and a pedestrian bridge collapsed. William Topaz McGonagall described this disaster, which claimed 38 lives, in a poem.

Mid-1990s, the station was completely rebuilt. As of March 28, 1994 held here the trains on the Docklands Light Railway towards Beckton, but the platforms were closed between 10 June 1996 and March 5, again in 1998 to allow the construction of the Jubilee Line. The opening of the Jubilee Line took place on 14 May 1999.

South of the station since December 2, 2005 branches off a range of DLR, which leads to London City Airport and Woolwich Arsenal. On 9 December 2006, the section was Stratford - North Woolwich North London Line shut down. Their platform took over on 31 August 2011, the Docklands Light Railway, after the portion to Stratford rebuilt and the new line had been built to Stratford International.
