Canons Regular of the Holy Cross of Coimbra

The Order of Canons Regular of the Holy Cross, self-designation Brothers of the Holy Cross or shortly Cross Order ( Order code: ORC ), called in Portuguese slang Cruzios, was founded in 1131 in Coimbra (Portugal). It was a foundation within the Augustinian Canons. Since 1976, the Order is a facility within the angel work.

History

1131-1903

Already in 1135 the re-establishment of Pope Innocent II was recognized. The Order played an important role in the reconquest of Portugal and by King Alfonso I as royal privileges were awarded him its gratitude for the prayers and was opened in Lisbon in 1147 with the completion of the Reconquista, the first house of the Order, he had now risen to important religious Portugal on. A founding member of St. Theotonius, was an advisor to King Alfonso and the Monastery of the Holy Cross, in the church of King Alfonso I and King Sancho I are buried is now regarded as one of the outstanding cultural heritage of Portugal. The scriptorium of the monastery and the corresponding library, which was supplied at the time of the secularization of the Library of Porto, are primary sources of medieval history of Portugal.

The best-known member of the Order was Anthony of Padua, Franciscan was later and there, probably, became one of their leading preachers also due to the theological formation, which he had received in the canons regular.

In the course of the Tridentine reforms in 1557 all Portuguese Canons pins were merged to form a congregation. 1573 were of this Congregation by Gregory XIII. the privileges of the Augustinian Canons awarded by the Lateran.

The Portuguese government banned in 1834 in the wake of secularization all orders, but this was never accepted by the Catholic Church. So the Order was da Boa Morte in 1903 be factual temporary end to the death of the last surviving member Joaquím, was canonically never repealed.

Since 1976

Because of this situation was in 1976 a group of priests who belonged founded by Gabriele bitterly " of Holy Angels" ( Engelwerk ) revive the Order again, what was finally confirmed in 1979 by the Holy See by the decree Perantiquus Ordo. The Order of Canons Regular of the Holy Cross supervised on behalf of the Holy See and the members of the associations "of the Holy Angels work" and heads the school Institutum sapientiae in the Brazilian Anápolis.

At the beginning of the 21st century was one of the Order 140 members in twelve offices in Portugal, Germany, Austria ( including the Castle of St. Peter Berg), USA, Mexico, Colombia, Brazil, Italy, India, the Philippines and Kazakhstan.
