Canticle

A canticle (plural Canticles, to German: song, song ) is a hymn-like prayer text from the Bible (Old or New Testament), which is not taken from the book of Psalms.

From their issues ago is no significant difference on the psalms, canticles also treat praise and thanksgiving, trust, and please, sadness and joy, repentance and faith confidence.

Liturgy of the Hours and Liturgy

In the Liturgy of the Hours, the Canticles usually occur as a New Testament equivalents to the Old Testament Psalms, as in the major canticles Benedictus, the canticle of Zechariah in Lk 1.68 to 79 EU ( Lauds ), the Magnificat, the canticle of Mary from Luke 1, 46-55 EU ( Vespers ), and Nunc dimittis, the canticle of Simeon from Luke 2:29-32 EU ( Compline ).

The canticle in Gregorian chant is - in contrast to the Psalms - always with a Initium, ie with an initial twist in each verse sung.
