Canton of Benfeld

The Canton Benfeld is a further breakdown of the arrondissements Sélestat - Erstein in the department of Bas- Rhin in Alsace region of France.

History

The canton was founded on March 4, 1790 with the establishment of the departments as part of the then " district Benfeld ". After that he belonged to the newly established " district Schlestadt ".

With the establishment of the arrondissements on 17 February 1800 the canton was again cut as part of the former arrondissements Barr. On 10 February 1806 the district Schlestadt from the Arrondissement Barr.

From 1871 to 1919 there was no further breakdown of the then " circle Schlettstadt " (French former: Schlestadt ).

Since June 28, 1919 the canton was again part of the arrondissement Sélestat, which was merged on May 24, 1974 Arrondissement Sélestat - Erstein.

Geography

The canton is bordered to the north by the cantons Obernai and Erstein, on the east by Germany to the Ortenaukreis in the administrative district of Freiburg (Baden- Württemberg), in the south to the cantons Marckolsheim and Sélestat and to the west by the Canton Barr.
