Canton of Säntis

The canton Santis was a canton of the Helvetic Republic. It was formed in 1798 from the area of the town and Abbey of St. Gall, the bailiwick of the Rhine Valley and the two Appenzell. Was named the Canton, following the example of the French departments, according to a geographical feature, namely the Mount Santis. Cantonal capital was St. Gallen. The Constitution of 29 May 1801, he was renamed in Canton Appenzell.

History

According to the first draft of the Helvetic Constitution of spring 1798 should form the Abbey of St. Gall and the city of St. Gallen together the Canton of St. Gallen. The former Common Lordships Rhine Valley, Uznach, Rapperswil, Gaster and Sargans and the subject territories of Glarus and Zurich, Will Berg and Sax - Forstegg were concatenated to the Canton Sargan, Glarus and Appenzell, remained independent. After the refusal of the rural community cantons to accept the Helvetic Constitution voluntarily, a new division was made according to their violent subjugation to minimize with the aim of the voting power of the rebellious cantons of the Helvetic Republic. For this reason, the new cantons Linth Santis and were formed in each of those areas that were considered former subject territories as politically reliable, dominated the conservative population of Glarus and Appenzell Altkantone.

With the Act of Mediation of 1803, the sovereignty of the two Appenzell and Glarus was restored and the Canton of St. Gallen has been newly created by the remaining areas of the cantons Santis and Linth (without courtyards, March and Einsiedeln ) were combined.
