Cao Xiu

Cao Xiu (Chinese曹休, Pinyin Cao Xiu, W.-G. Ts'ao Hsiu; Zì文 烈, Wénliè, Wen- lent; * before 170, † 228) was a general under the Chinese warlord Cao at the time of Three Kingdoms. He was also a distant relative of Cao Cao.

Life

According to the Chronicles of the Three Kingdoms Cao Xiu lost his father before he was twenty years of age, when the Yellow Turban Rebellion broke out. He fled with his mother to the south over the Yellow River.

When Cao Cao joined in the coalition against Dong Zhuo 190 and his army aufstellte, Cao Xiu placed in his service. Cao Cao was very pleased with the support of this distant branch of the family and Cao Xiu treated as his own son.

Cao Xiu later took part in many campaigns against the Shu Han, particularly in the Battle of Wulan. He was a good counselor and was appointed commander of the Imperial Guard later.

After Cao Cao's death in 220, Cao Xiu enjoyed a good relationship with the heir Cao Pi Cao Xiu This made ​​for a general guarding the south and sent him to the front, where he was to fight Sun Quan's armies.

In 222, Cao Pi personally led a campaign against Sun Quan. Cao Xiu even became the general who appointed conquered the East. He supervised more than twenty armies from different regions and defeated Sun Quan's forces under Lu Fan in Dongpu ( at today's Wuhu, Anhui ).

After Cao Pis death (226 ) Cao Xiu was the second Wei Emperor Cao Rui. He was appointed commander of the defense forces and retained his command of the defense of Yang Province.

In 228, Cao Rui led another offensive against Sun Quan. Cao Xiu led his forces after Xunyang. He followed the advice of the seemingly overflowed Wu officer Zhou Fang and led his army deep into rough country, where he was attacked and defeated at the Battle of Shiting. In a memorandum Cao Xiu known his misjudgment, but Cao Rui forgave him.

Shortly after, Cao Xiu died from a skin condition on the back. Posthumously the title of Marquis Zhuang ( = resistant ), he was awarded.
